Winter Car Check & Hacks

As we all know, driving in the winter is completely different from driving at any other time of the year. Adverse weather conditions combine with longer periods of darkness, throwing up challenges that often get the better of drivers, no matter their experience and confidence. Unfortunately, there’s no definitive answer of how best to tackle what nature conjures up, however there are measures you CAN take that will best prepare you and your vehicle for winter, reducing your chance of being affected by freezing temperatures, snow and ice – YES!

Firstly, get your car winter-ready! 🚗❄️🔧

It is essential that you understand the key issue areas to keep an eye on, specifically at this time of year! So we’re giving you some advice on your winter car service/check.

IMPORTANT – 🚨 Those of you who read our last blog will know that we provided every VWG owner with the chance to redeem a FREE WINTER CHECK at Quattro-Tech if they rang up and referenced the title of our last blog. If you STILL HAVEN’T DONE SO, read our previous blog and claim your check – but be quick as you MUST complete your booking BEFORE the end of November! 🚨

Now where were we… Winter Checks concentrate on six main areas of the vehicle (unless our techs spot something else significant whilst performing the inspection), these are:

(Monitoring tread depth, condition and any sign of imminent wear and tear.)

(No one wants to be left out in the cold with a dead battery, we’ll make sure your battery is protected, charged and secured.)

(Engine-related breakdowns are commonly related to issues with a vehicle’s cooling system. A Winter Check will ensure the cooling system in your vehicle is operating effectively and efficiently. Antifreeze is added to the water in a vehicle’s radiator to prevent it from seizing up. Frozen water expands, splitting engine hoses and pipes, causing leaks and reducing the effectiveness of the cooling process.)

(Windscreen wipers are vital, even more so in the winter as the weather can change unexpectedly and dramatically. Not being able to see the road ahead perfectly causes real danger to you and other road users. We’ll inspect your wipers to make sure they’re in optimum condition for screen clearing. Your washer fluid level will be checked and topped up if required.)

(To ensure all lights are secure and working to the correct standard. With limited sunlight during the winter, the chances of being faced with fog increase and front and rear lights are used more with prolonged darkness. Driving with ineffective lights is both illegal and dangerous.)

(As most of you will know, too little or too much oil in a vehicle can cause major engine problems. Finding the best engine oil for winter in your car is important as oil may need to be thinner during winter to allow the vehicle to run more smoothly – this is something our technician can advise you on.)

After your Winter Car Check, you’re now ready for the roads! 🚗❄️✅

We’ve also picked out a few of our go-to Winter Car Hacks for you all to try!👇

1. To quickly eliminate the fog from your windscreen without creating smudges, use a whiteboard eraser – which can be easily stored in your glovebox! 🌫

2. To prevent your windscreen from fogging up, before you turn your car off every night, open the windows for a few seconds to let the cold, dry air in. This dry air will help dehumidify your car overnight! 💨

3. Don’t leave water bottles or other drinks in your car overnight. The moisture from them can contribute to a foggy windshield.💧

4. Prevent your side mirrors from freezing overnight just by covering them up! You can use a plastic shopping bag! Simply tie the end or keep it in place with a rubber band for ice-free mirrors! ❄️

5. Clean your headlights by covering them with a layer of toothpaste. Let it sit for a minute or two, then rinse the toothpaste off with warm water. The toothpaste treatment will help remove grime on the exterior of your headlights to increase brightness.💡
