The Good To Knows
Frequently Asked Questions
The MOT test, or Ministry of Transport test, is an annual assessment conducted on vehicles in the UK to ensure their safety, roadworthiness, and compliance with environmental standards. It covers various aspects such as vehicle structure, exhaust emissions, braking systems, lights, tires, and more.
Generally, a vehicle’s first MOT test is due three years from its date of registration. For example, if your vehicle was first registered on May 1, 2020, its first MOT will be due by May 1, 2023. However, it is always advisable to check the specific MOT requirements based on your vehicle’s registration date.
If your vehicle fails the MOT test, the test center will provide you with a VT30 certificate, also known as a “failure document.” This document outlines the reasons for the failure and the specific areas that require attention. You will need to address these issues and have your vehicle retested within 10 working days, using the same test center, to obtain a valid MOT certificate.
It is illegal to drive a vehicle on public roads in the UK without a valid MOT certificate, with a few exceptions (such as when driving to a pre-booked MOT appointment or to a garage for necessary repairs). If you are caught driving without a valid MOT, you may face penalties, fines, and even risk invalidating your insurance coverage.
The average duration of an MOT test is approximately 45 minutes to an hour. However, this can vary depending on the vehicle’s type, condition, and any additional services requested. When attending your MOT appointment, it is advisable to bring your vehicle’s V5C registration document, as well as any service history or maintenance records that may be relevant to the test.
